Rules and details

  • Athlete Parking is allowed off Curry Road and two surrounding lots. These lots are just north of the race start. Easy 3-5 minute walk to race start. We will have a drop zone from 5 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. for those needing to set-up base near the race start. Volunteers will be on hand to help unload each vehicle. We ask each driver to move the vehicles as quickly as possible. We have two close parking lots, enough to house 75+ vehicles. North parking lot can host another 75 vehicles and surrounding streets can host another 150 vehicles. Those arriving without heavy gear, we ask that you park at the north lot. Easy 2-minute ride or 5 minute walk to the race start.
  • No passing allowed in the through lane or shoots in the exchange area.
  • Papago Park is not closed for this event. You MUST follow all trail rules including yielding to horse traffic and pedestrians. Although the stable is aware of this event, they said they notified all horse owners to avoid riding on Saturday, they/we cannot control the owners who have horses in other areas located near the park. The same applies to walkers, runners and recreational riders. We will monitor all areas of the course to avoid any concern, but we simply cannot promise that no pedestrians will try to use this park.
  • Designated areas will be marked on the east and west side of the sidewalk entering the exchange area. These marking are orange construction flags numbered 1 to 100. You must reserve space to use this location. This is a $20 donation to the Sydney Hudson Foundation. You CANNOT put any kind of stake into the ground due to the extensive irrigation system. You are required to secure your canopy so it does not injure the racers. You can secure it to coolers and with sand bags. Unsecured canopies must be taken down if conditions or safety warrants it.
  • You must take care of your site throughout the day. Absolutely no littering, destroying of park property or any surroundings. If this occurs, it will result in immediate disqualification and fines can be enforced.
  • Horses have the right away. If horse/horses are on the trail, you must stop and allow the horse to pass before resuming. We cannot afford ANYONE to get hurt. This is a charity event, have fun, relax and please be respectful to others. Lord knows they were kind enough to let us use this venue for the entire day.
  • We have one hazard on the course, "the tunnel". We will have volunteers at both ends of the tunnel making riders dismount the bike and run through the tunnel from South to North. Riders will be allowed to stay on the bike from North to South. Just remember, it will be two-way traffic in a narrow tunnel. Again, safety is our priority. We will have several halogen lights set-up in the tunnel; this will ensure clear visibility from both ends.
  • Obey all City and Park rules. We have the blessing to host our 12-hour event in the City of Tempe. Please respect the City and the Park by obeying all rules. Safety first.
  • All 2-person, 4-person, and corporate teams must exchange the ankle bracelet each lap. Missed exchange of timing chip means no time given for that lap!
  • Each rider must "check-in" at the designated category tables. The order established at race start "MUST" remain the same throughout the 12-Hour event. Every team is required to switch rider every lap. Only if a rider is injured or ill, can the order be altered. Once a rider misses his/her lap, that rider may not continue. The only exception to this rule is mechanical. If a rider misses a lap due to mechanical, it will be required for that rider to seek approval from Bike Tech Support provided by Landis in the exchange zone! Tech Support will approve and notify the volunteer at the "check-in table.
  • It is highly encouraged to be cautious & careful. Crash and it can result in missing a lap or missing the start order, which results in no more racing for the rest of the day. OUCH! Same thing applies if you start too hard. Lack of recovery or too fatigued can result in one less rider for the balance of the 12-hours. Be smart! Pace yourself and stay alert.
  • You must dismount in the exchange area at the designated areas while going over the lap mate. This applies to all riders including solo and teams. You must pass through the exchange area on every lap or you will not get credit for that lap. This does not apply to the through lane, which is on the west end of the exchange area. You can ride through this lane, but note; NO passing while doing so.
  • Have fun. Enjoy the wonderful people who will be both supporting this event through riding and the 100+ volunteers who will be giving up personal time to help all of us. Please be thankful, grateful, polite and respectful to each other. We are all here to support Sydney and her Foundation. Be thankful you can race, you can speak, you can walk, and last, you can live!
  • LeMans style start. We will begin the Lemans style start (Run) just South of the parking lot at the park. It is approximately 600 yards to the exchange area. This should give plenty of time for the athletes to disperse and avoid one mass start on the bike.
